Pets Going To Hawaii or Other Countries

If you are in the military and have pets, please be aware if you are sent to your next duty station - it is your responsibility to make sure your pet is up-to-date and ready to go. There are some places such as Hawaii, Japan, Guam and England which have extremely strict import rules and regulations. There are specific vaccines and bloodwork requirements which need to be done before you leave with your pet - this process can take 4-6 months to complete. If you are not prepared and the animal has not had the proper requirements fulfilled it will be subject to a 120-day quarantine! Some quarantine stays may be longer and some may be shorter depending on destination. 

Please contact your military official(s) for the proper paperwork depending on your next assignment, you need to bring this information with you for your visits here. If you need help interpreting the paperwork, please call us and we will assist you and put in reminders accordingly. Remember you are responsible to keep up with appointment dates and charges which apply - not only here but also when you arrive at your destination. Also note, rules and regulations are subject to change depending on what the place of import mandates - we have no control over these changes.

BASIC (condensed version) of potential requirements - EVERY COUNTRY HAS DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS:

Rabies Vaccinations - rabies requirements are VERY strict.
  • Each pet must have been vaccinated at least TWICE in its lifetime.
  • Each rabies vaccine must have been given more than 90 days apart.
  • Most recent vaccine: not more than 12 months before arrival with a 1-year vaccine OR not more than 36 months before arrival with a 3-year rabies
  • Most recent vaccine: not less than 90 days before arrival.
Other Vaccinations
  • Canine: distemper virus, canine adenovirus-2 (hepatitis), parvovirus, canine parainfluenze virus, letospirosis, and bordetella (kennel cough)
  • Canine corona virus is recommended, but optional
  • Feline: panleukopenia virus (feline viral enteritis), viral rhinotracheitis (feline herpesvirus-1), feline calicivirus and Chlamydia psittaci (pneumonitis)
  • Feline Leukemia vaccine is recommended, but optional
Microchip Requirements
  • An electronic microchip must be implanted before the OIE-FAVN rabies blood test is performed.
  • It must be scanned by a veterinarian to ensure it is working and correct identification numbers have been recorded.
  • If the pet cannot be identified by scanning upon arrival - it will NOT qualify for "direct release" or "5-day-or-less quarantine". It WILL be assigned the 120-day quarantine!
OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test
  • We draw blood and send it to Kansas State University: the blood must not be more than 36 months and not less than 120 days of the date of arrival.
  • You must carry a copy of successful blood test results showing your pet's microchip number - we can provide a copy for you! You cannot contact the laboratory directly.
Documents
  • Signed original or carbon copies of rabies certificates for two recent rabies vaccinations: must include vaccine name, lot number, booster interval, vaccination dates and expiration dates.
  • Original Health Certificate (in English)
  • Pet must have been treated for ticks with a product containing Fipronil or equivalent long-term product within 14 days of arrival. Product name and date of treatment MUST be recorded on health certificate!
  • Revolution is NOT acceptable.
Please Note:

Puppies and kittens may be 10 months of age before preparations are complete for the "5-day-or-less quarantine program"! If they are too young to meet these requirements they will be quarantined for 120 days! 

Non-domestic felines and canines are prohibited for export/import - ie. hybrids, wolf-crosses, dingos, bengal and savannah cats.

You also need to get a proper crate for transport, and make the travel arrangements. 

The 120-day quarantine program costs $1,080 per pet.

The 5-day-or-less quarantine program costs $224 per pet.
The direct release program costs $165 per pet.

There are no discounts for multiple pets. The law requires that the program be self-sustaining and paid solely by the users of quarantine.

The U.S. Department of Defense may reimburse active duty military members with dogs or cats up to $550 per family for quarantine expenses. Military members should check with their command on whether this allotment is available to them.
