Spaying and Neutering:

If you are not going to breed or are done breeding your pet we HIGHLY recommend you spay/neuter your pet. This can be done any time after 12 weeks of age; the "wait until they are at least 6 months old" suggestion no longer applies. After 12 weeks of age their livers are mature enough to handle the anesthetic procedure. It is healthier for your pet to be fixed and also helps reduce the numbers of unwanted puppies/kittens in shelters or backyards!

Females are spayed (ovariohysterectomy), whereas males are neutered (castration).

Interesting facts about Spaying your pet:

Spaying before her first heat cycle will result in less than a 1% chance of developing breast cancer.

Spaying your pet after her first heat cycle increases her chances to 8%.

After two heat cycles, that percentage drastically increases to 26%.

After two years, no protective benefit exists - you should routinely check for lumps and bumps.

You should still have your pet spayed because it also reduces the chances of her getting an infected uterus, which can be life-threatening.

Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer.

Spaying, obviously, elimates unwanted pregnancies.

Pets with diabetes and epilepsy will benefit because once spayed, hormonal changes will no longer interfere with medications.

Interesting facts about Neutering your pet:

Neutering your dog eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, the 2nd most common tumor in male dogs.

Reduces the risk of prostate cancer and prostatitis, as well as perianal tumors.

Reduces roaming and fighting (for females in heat).

Eliminates risk and spread of STDs and unwanted litters.

Reality:

More than 4 million pets are euthanized yearly because they have no home, most being the result of unwanted litters!
