Weight Management Information
It is becoming more and more common that our pets suffer from being overweight or obese. Not only is this bad for bones and joints, there are other potential health risks involved as well! Breathing problems, high blood pressure, arthritis, reduced activity, and skin/coat problems may arise. Too much food and not enough exercise is certainly a cause for weight gain, however, there may be underlying metabolic diseases. We would initially check for diseases such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease by running various blood work panels; if these blood work results come back normal, an individualized weight loss program would be constructed for your pet.

If diet and exercise are not enough, we have a drug (SLENTROL) approved by the FDA which reduces your dog’s appetite. Slentrol has been proven to work, even in dogs which have had ineffective weight loss results in the past. Slentrol is ONLY approved for dogs! Slentrol will cause Feline Hepatic Lipidosis (fatty liver syndrome) in cats, therefore, not approved for their use. For helpful information and tools, please visit: www.slentrol.com .

Purina has recently introduced a weight-loss challenge. It is designed to help your pet lose weight in a healthy way. Purina OM is an overweight management diet; it is a prescription diet which is recommended by your pet’s veterinarian or technician. We must, however, have an established relationship before we can sell the diet. You can visit www.purinaveterinarydiets.com – just follow the links to “learn more about formulas” and click on “OM”. Purine OM comes in canine and feline formulas - treats are also available!!
